چکیده

Abstract This paper reviews the recent progress in our estimation of ocean dynamic topography and derived surface geostrophic currents, mainly based on multiple nadir radar altimeter missions. These altimetric observations provide cornerstone circulation observing system from space. The largest signal sea is mean dominated by marine geoid, we will discuss altimetry, once geoid other corrections have been estimated removed. We then address advances large-scale mesoscale space, particular challenges opportunities for new polar regions. active research barotropic tides internal tidal also presented. addresses how networks global multi-satellite situ are being combined assimilated to characterize four-dimensional circulation, climate forecasting systems. For future need continuity current crucial, exciting enhancement come with wide-swath extension into coastal high-latitude regions, proposals direct total satellites 2030 period.

A Mathematical Model for Indian Ocean Circulation in Spherical Coordinate

In recent years, the Indian Ocean (IO) has been discovered to have a much larger impact on climate variability than previously thought. This paper reviews processes in which the IO is, or appears to be, actively involved. We begin the mathematical model with a pattern for summer monsoon winds. Three dimensional temperature and velocity fields are calculated analytically for the ocean forced by ...

Ocean Circulation

The ocean moderates the Earth's climate due to its vast capacity to store and transport heat; the influence of the large-scale ocean circulation on changes in climate is considered in this chapter. The ocean experiences both buoyancy forcing (through heating/cooling and evaporation/precipitation) and wind forcing. Almost all ocean forcing occurs at the surface, but these changes are communicate...

Ocean Circulation

Volume 1, The Earth system: physical and chemical dimensions of global environmental change, pp 557–579 Ocean circulation is one of the major elements of climate, moving heat, freshwater, nutrients and dissolved gases. Ocean circulation at the largest spatial scales and long time scales contains many elements that are in common in the different oceans. Understanding the processes that drive the...

Ocean circulation from altimetry: progresses and challenges

The paper provides a review of recent progresses in physical oceanography, such as results on studying ocean circulation and mesoscale ocean dynamics derived from satellite altimetry. Since 1992, satellite altimetry has provided an unprecedented 16 years monitoring of sea level and ocean circulation variations. Continuous measurements from satellites like TOPEX/Poseidon and Jason-1 help us und...

Global ocean circulation during 1992–1997, estimated from ocean observations and a general circulation model

[1] A three-dimensional oceanic state is estimated for the period 1992–1997 as it results from combining large-scale ocean data sets with a general circulation model. At the cost of increased computational load, the estimation (assimilation) method is chosen specifically so that the resulting state estimate is consistent with the model equations, having no artificial sources or sinks. To bring ...
